======================================================================================

2. GAME INSTALLATION

  1. Insert the Cossacks-II CD1 disc into your optical drive (e.g. CD-ROM or DVD-ROM).
The Autoplay screen will open automatically – this should bring up the menu from which
you can either install the game or exit installation.

      Select “Install Game”.

  2. If the Autoplay function is disabled on your computer, you’ll do the following
  to install the game:

     b. Select CD-ROM from drive list (the drive the Cossacks-II disc is in).

     c. Double click on the Autoplay icon to launch the “Cossacks 2”
installation menu then select the 3rd item.

     d. Double click on the setup icon to launch “Cossacks 2” setup
directly then select the 3rd point.

  3. Select Install game in the launcher to begin game installation on your computer.

  4. You can select the folder on your hard disk drive where the game will be installed.

  5. To complete game installation follow the instructions that appear.

  6. Once the game is installed, the autoplay menu will appear and you will be offered
the opportunity to start the game.

==================================================================

3. DIRECTX 9

    1. In order for the game to function correctly you must have DirectX 9 installed
on your computer. You can find DirectX 9 on the game disc if you need to install it.

    2. If for some reason the Setup program doesn’t install DirectX, you can install
it manually using the DirectX setup files which can be found on the game disc. You can
download the latest version of DirectX from the Microsoft web site as well
    (www.microsoft.com/directx).

    3. If you try to install a new version of DirectX on your computer when it already has
DirectX installed it won’t harm the existing version. In this case, the software will
    just be updated.

    4. Manual DirectX 9 Installation from the “Cossacks 2” Disc

You can manually install the software from the game disc:

         1. Insert the game disc into your optical drive. When “Cossacks 2” autoplay
starts the Launcher appears, from which you can either install the game or exit.

Select Exit to abort the installation and exit the Setup menu.

         2. With the “Cossacks 2” disc in the drive, open the “My Computer” folder
         or Windows Explorer.

         3. Click with the right mouse button on CD drive icon and choose Open.

         4. Find the DirectX folder and open it by double clicking on it.
            Find the file named "dxsetup.exe".

Double click on the file and follow the software installation instructions.

         5. When DirectX 9 is installed, you’ll see a query when the system restarts.
If such query doesn’t appear, it means that old files didn’t need to be replaced.
If you have already installed “Cossacks 2”, you can run the game.

         6. If you haven’t yet installed “Cossacks 2” follow the instructions in the
         Game Installation section.

5. CREATING AN INTERNET GAME AND JOINING GAMES IN PROGRESS

Once the game is loaded, select the Internet section in the Main menu. Here you’ll see the
Internet game shell with the login window, in which you’ll have to enter your registration name.
If you’ve already created an account, choose Enter to join the game. If you need to change your account,
select Edit account; select your account in the window then click on Enter. You can also edit your
data without creating new account - select Edit data and enter the new info.
In order to create a new account select Edit data, then select New account. Enter your information
and click on Register.

Note: If you haven’t played an internet game with this game version, the Create New Account section
will open automatically on selecting the Internet Game item.

You can also download your profile from the game server, if it has already been created there – click
on Edit account and then on Old Data Items. Enter your game name, password and game registration number
and then click on Enter. If the entered information is correct your data will be downloaded to your
computer from the server, including details and scores.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Each time you change your personal data or create a new account, don’t forget to enter your personal
game registration number. Only 1 account is assigned to that number.

Having clicked on the Enter button, you’ll enter the Internet game shell’s Game Settings menu.
On the right side of the screen you’ll see a menu with the list of players; below that is the chat window;
in the center is the list of games available to join. There are Refresh and Create buttons below the list of games. When you click on the Refresh button, the entire list of games currently in progress on the server will be displayed (the list also refreshes automatically every 30 seconds). In order to join an existing game, click on its name in the list with the left mouse button.

News and Events
In this section you can get acquainted with the latest news about updates and events in the internet-game. To the left of the news window you can view the list of available sections – for example, on choosing the Punishments item you’ll see information on punished or banned players. There is a built-in forum in the internet game shell where you can post messages and read messages from the other players; here you can create new topics as well.

List of Players
In this section you will find the list of all players registered on the game server. A player’s data includes their name, country, current score and rank. In order to view that information, click on the player’s name with the left mouse button. You can read other players’ letters here, as well as switching to the list of Clans, where the information on all the clans, dates of their creation, on the number of a clan’s members and its founder, the total average score of each clan is also listed. In order to receive more specific information on a clan, click on its name.

Game Settings
In this section you’ll find the list of created and available games. Just select the game you want to join and click on it – you’ll automatically move into the game room, where you can chat with those who have joined the game. Select the nation you like and prepare for battle.
In order to create a new Internet game, select Create Item. In the menu that appears select the name of your game, the number of players, game type and password (if necessary). Once you’ve done that you’ll automatically move to the newly created game room, where you can see the landscape, the number of peasants and resources, victory conditions, map size, time limit and can turn the “Fog of War” on and off. After all settings are selected, select a nation and wait until other players join your game. When everyone is ready, press Start.

Score Count
In this section you can see the list of previous games, their participants as well as the score achieved by each player. In order to switch between pages of the list, use the Next item.
In the lower right part of internet game shell screen, you’ll find seven button-functions which considerably widen your options in using the internet game shell.
The first button allows you to send a message, displayed in the messages window (this can also be done by pressing the Enter button).
The second button turns the mode which separates users according to the game version they’re using on and off. If this mode is on, you’ll receive messages only from those players who are using the same “Cossacks 2” version as you are.
The third button turns the Private filter on and off. If the filter is on, you’ll receive only private messages, while common chat will be totally ignored by the system.
The fourth button allows you to receive information on a selected player - personal data, general score and rank.
The fifth button allows you to join a game created by the selected player (where he has already created a game room).
The sixth button allows you to ignore messages which are delivered from a certain user. To activate that option, select the user from the list, click on the button and you will no longer receive messages from that user.
The seventh button allows you to create private messages to send to any player on the list. Choose the recipient, click on this button, and all written messages will be sent only to that user.

=====================================================================================

6. DEBUGGING

   - The game crashes before I start to play!

This happens mostly due to problems with drivers, hardware or DirectX. The effects of such bugs can be fixed by installing updated drivers or changing some settings.

   - When I play for quite a long time, the game crashes. I don’t have any trouble with Windows function, or with applications such as Internet Explorer or older games.

This happens mainly due to graphic (display) driver problems. If you don’t update drivers for several months, it can cause problems with the game. In order to resolve the problem, install the latest version of the driver.

   - Troubles with the Internet Game

In order to play “Cossacks 2” over the internet you computer has to have access to the internet.

  - Display refresh rate usually exceeds permissible limits due to the screen resolution change.

Try to set the maximum refresh rate manually. In order to do that set the rate value which is supported for a given resolution in VideoConfig.txt: RefreshRateBias = <rate value, Hz>. E.g.: RefreshRateBias = 75

   - I notice graphical bugs during the game.

Install an updated video driver and new DirectX version 9c. Do the same thing for audio problems – install a new driver for your audio card.

===================================================================

7. FIREWALLS AND ROUTERS

When a computer can access basic Internet services and can play the
game, Internet play is not usually much of a problem unless the
computer accesses the Internet through a router or firewall. Often,
special appliances, sometimes called "Fireboxes", combine Firewall and Router functions into a single easy-to-configure device.

Unfortunately, firewalls and routers are topics where the specifics
quickly become quite incomprehensible to people who don't work with
them. In general, most firewall/routers can be easily configured so
that our game can be played through them by at least one computer.
Also, the person who configures them can use the information supplied
below to either make the needed changes or to tell you why such changes can't be done.

- Resolving problems between a Firewall and the Cossacks-II game

- Firewall problems are easy to define. They are problems where certain
types of Internet services or data are BLOCKED. Cossacks-II requires
that TCP and UDP ports 34000-34005 and TCP port 6667 be open for
  communication in both directions.

- Not only must UDP packets be able to pass through the firewall in both
directions, but computers on both sides of the firewall must be able to
initiate the flow of data important for "stateful" packet filtering
firewalls that generally permit packets to flow in both directions ONLY
once the flow is initiated by a computer behind the firewall, but tend
to block connection attempts by hosts on the outside of the firewall to
  hosts within.

- Resolving problems with Cossacks-II and Internet Routers (gateways)

- Routing problems arise most frequently in situations where one or
more computers use a gateway router or firewall/router to access the
Internet. If the computers on an Internet-connected network have their
own real routable IP address leased from an ISP- even dynamic ones assigned
using DHCP, there should be no routing problems with the Cossacks-II game.

- However, if a computer doesn't have a routable IP address, but
instead depends on a router that uses Network Address Translation
(NAT) so that the router's one real routable IP address can be used by
all computers on the LAN for Internet access, there are likely to be
problems with the Cossacks-II game unless steps are taken to allow other
computers on the Internet to initiate connections with that computer.
This is because with only the router having a real routable IP
address, there is no way for computers on the Internet to send
information specifically to computers on a LAN served in this manner,
because the only IP address they can send to is the real routable
  address of the router.

One of three things must be done:

1. The cheapest and most straightforward solution is to have the
router send all packets coming to it from the Internet on TCP and UDP
ports 34000-34005 and TCP port 6667 to a specific computer. This means
that only that one computer on the LAN can play Cossacks-II
on the Internet because only it is the only one that can receive connection requests
from other players outside the LAN.

2. The next simplest solution is to have a pool of real routable IP
addresses for One-to-One Network Address translation. In One-to-One
NAT masquerades, the router substitutes or "masquerades" the
non-routable IP address of a LAN computer with a real routable IP
addressed assigned to that computer from the pool. Computers and
other hosts on the Internet can send data to the router using the
Masquerade address and the router will know which LAN computer to
send that data to because of the One-to-One NAT assignment.

3. An extreme case that should really work well but is more difficult
and expensive is configuring a LAN computer to use a real routable
IP address. That computer would either need two network interfaces
(one for the LAN and one for the Internet) or it could not be
connected to both the LAN and the Internet.

- Cossacks-II and Routers That Use NAT:

- Cossacks-II does not guarantee full functionality for computers
accessing the Internet via a router using NAT or even One-to-One NAT.
Users with computers connected in this way are limited to joining games hosted by
others since these users cannot create their own games. Actually they can
create games, but other players can't see, much less, join them. Full functionality
is possible but it depends on the network topology and the type of router used.

10. INDENTIFIED ERRORS

- Game sometimes doesn’t work under Windows XP Service Pack 2

- To avoid problems with graphics, you need to turn the anisotropic filtering option
on in the 3D settings section of your graphic card’s setting options.

===================================================================

11. HINTS AND TIPS

- If you have a graphic display card with less than 128MB and you experience problems
with the game’s performance, try to set the animation quality on “low” (and, optionally,
Shadows as well). The display performance should improve.

- During a multiplayer game, don’t use the Alt-Tab combination or you’ll automatically lose.

- In order to play Internet games comfortably and control great masses of forces,
you should have at least 768MB or 1GB of system memory in your computer.

- In order to increase Internet game speed, it’s recommended to set your display screen
resolution to 1024 x 768.

- In the event of crashes, problems with performance and game loading, check the swap-file
settings (the virtual memory swapping file). You can adjust it as follows (Windows XP Home Edition):
Right-click on My Computer and click on the Properties item in the menu. In the Properties window,
click on the “Advanced” tab. In the window that appears, click the Settings button in the Performance
section. Click the Advanced tab in the Performance Options window that appears then click on the Change
button in the Virtual memory section. In the Virtual Memory window the system disk it’s necessary to set
either “System managed size” or choose “Custom Size” and enter 3200 and 4400 for the Initial and Maximum
sizes. Click “Set” and restart your computer. Try setting the swap file size to “System managed size” first, but if this doesn’t help use the abovementioned sizes.
